Selenite and clear quartz are the maintenance pair every working crystal kit should include. Selenite cleanses; clear quartz amplifies the cleansing. Together they make a small, low-effort routine that keeps the rest of the kit in working order.
What selenite does
Selenite is a soft, fibrous variety of gypsum, often white or translucent. The tradition holds the unusual claim that selenite does not need to be cleansed itself, it only cleanses other stones. Whether or not that holds metaphysically, the practice is convenient: a selenite plate or wand can sit permanently under or beside the rest of the kit, and the kit is always available for use.
What clear quartz adds
Clear quartz amplifies whatever intention is set with it. In this pairing, the intention is the cleansing itself. A small clear quartz point set next to a selenite plate makes the cleansing arrangement more focused, and over time, the practitioner who uses the arrangement comes to associate the visual cue of the two stones together with a felt sense of "the day's residue is handled."
A working arrangement
Set a selenite plate at the back of the altar or workspace. Lay any working stones, the ones you have been carrying through the day, on top of the plate at night. Place a clear quartz point next to the plate. The arrangement runs continuously; the practice is the act of placing each stone down at the end of the day.
Care notes
Selenite is the special case. Do not get it wet. Do not put it in a humid room for extended periods. Wipe with a dry cloth only. Replace any selenite that becomes flaky or feels gritty. Clear quartz is one of the most durable stones in the kit, rinse, soak, sun, smoke, all are safe.
A note on quality
Most selenite on the market is genuine; the mineral is abundant and inexpensive. Look for clean white pieces with visible fibrous structure. Clear quartz quality varies enormously; for working purposes, small clear points without obvious fractures are sufficient.
Best for
Cleansing other crystals; setting an altar; clearing a workspace; nightly reset of the day's residue.
What to avoid
Do not get selenite wet, it is soft and water-soluble.
