Birthstones and Zodiac Crystals: A Modern Reference

A clear list of traditional and modern birthstones by month, plus the zodiac stones each sign has carried across centuries, and how to actually use them.

The birthstone tradition is older than the modern jewelry industry and a good deal richer. The custom of associating a particular stone with a particular birth month traces to the breastplate of Aaron in the Hebrew Bible, where twelve stones were assigned to the twelve tribes of Israel; from there it traveled through Roman, Polish, Indian, and Tibetan traditions, picking up local variations along the way. The list most Americans know today was standardized in 1912 by the Jewelers of America. It is one tradition among many.

Below is a modern working reference, the standardized birthstone, plus the most commonly cited traditional alternatives, plus the zodiac stones that map to roughly the same window.

How to use a birthstone (without making it precious)

The most reliable use is daily contact. Wear it as jewelry, carry it in a pocket, or set it on the nightstand. The point is not the gem; the point is the small, daily reminder that you are a particular person, born at a particular time, walking through your particular life. The stone is the bookmark.

If your birthstone does not appeal to you, use a traditional alternative or a zodiac stone instead. The tradition is a reference, not a prescription. The stone you actually use is always more powerful than the stone you were "supposed to" have.
